ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Infrared thermography (IT) makes it possible to assess body temperature, measure changes in body heat dissipation on the surface, and relate them to body composition characteristics and anthropometric indices. The objective of this study was to increase the number of records of body areas evaluated with IT and establish the relationships of these temperatures (32 body areas) with body composition variables and anthropometric indices, such as body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio, waist-height ratio, in adult men divided according to their weight status. A total of 60 healthy adult men participated, divided into 2 groups: group 1 (n=30), with a body mass index (BMI) ≤ 24.9, age 23.2 ± 3.9 years, body mass 66.5 ± 6.5 kg, and height 170.5 ± 7.4 cm; and, group 2 (n = 30), with BMI > 24.9, age 29.4 ± 9.9 years, body mass 84.5 ± 11.9 kg, and height 172.0 ± 7.18 cm. Anthropometric and IT assessments were performed. Subjects with BMI ≤ 24.9 kg/ m2 presented higher values of surface temperature in all areas studied, unlike subjects with BMI levels > 24.9 kg/m2, where body heat dissipation was lower. There is a close relationship between skin surface temperature and BMI, where subjects with a normal BMI showed higher heat dissipation and surface temperature values, in all evaluated areas, unlike subjects with a BMI that was above the normal limit.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the association of anthropometric indicators of adiposity in older people, according to sex, with hypertension; to compare the scores of these variables between participants with and without hypertension; and to identify among them those with better predictive ability for screening the outcome. Methods: Epidemiological, population-based, cross-sectional study conducted with 210 older people. The anthropometric indicators analyzed were: body mass index, waist circumference, abdominal circumference, body adiposity index, triceps skinfold, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, and conicity index. Hypertension diagnosis was self-reported. Results: The indicators of adiposity increased the probability of hypertension. Additionally, hypertensive older people of both sexes showed higher scores on adiposity indicators than non-hypertensive subjects (p < 0.05). For men, the most sensitive indicator for the outcome was conicity index (81.82%; cut-off point: 1.30) and the most specific was body mass index (69.77%; cut-off point: 25.05 kg/m2). For women, the most sensitive indicator for the outcome was the body adiposity index (86.08%; cut-off point: 31.03%), and the most specific was the abdominal circumference (82.82%; cut-off point: 98.70 cm). Conclusion: In both sexes, the indicators of adiposity were positively associated with hypertension; hypertensive participants showed higher values in the scores of the indicators. Additionally, the body adiposity index (women) and conicity index (men) demonstrated greater ability to screen for hypertension, while the abdominal circumference and body mass index demonstrated greater ability to screen for non-hypertensive women and men, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Objective: to estimate the prevalence and to analyze sociodemographic and lifestyle factors associated with excess peripheral, central and general adiposity in adolescents. Method: a cross-sectional study, conducted in the city of São José/Santa Catarina, Brazil, with 1,132 adolescents (14-19 years old). The dependent variables were peripheral adiposity (tríceps skinfold), central (subscapular skinfold) and general (presence of peripheral and central adiposity), classified from the 90th percentile of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention curve. The independent variables were economic level, physical activity (PA) and eating habits, obtained through questionnaires. The sexual maturation was evaluated according to Tanner criteria. Results: the excess of central and general peripheral adiposity was 11.1%, 10.3% and 7.1%, respectively, for male adolescents and 13.1%, 14.7% and 9.8%, respectively, for adolescent females. Males with low PA l evels presented higher odds of excess peripheral adiposity (OR: 2.32; 95% CI: 1.09-5.37). The female adolescents in the post-pubertal maturational stage presented higher odds of excess central adiposity (OR: 3.80; 95% CI: 2.25-6.41) and general adiposity (OR: 3.31; 95% CI: 1.79-6.10), and those who studied at night had a lower chance of having excess central adiposity (OR: 0.35, 95% CI: 0.18-0.71) and general adiposity (OR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.19-0.95). Conclusion: the excess of adiposity was present and that the low level of PA for the male adolescents, the post-pubertal maturational stage and the daytime shift were factors associated with excess adiposity for female adolescents. ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Anthropometric parameters for the estimation of body composition are variables commonly used in the identification of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs). In this regard, infrared thermography (IT) could be used as a tool that provides relevant information in the CVRFs assessment by estimating skin surface temperature and its relationship with the anthropometric measures associated with these factors. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship of skin surface temperature in adult men with anthropometric variables associated with CVRFs. The study gathered sixty-four healthy men aged 26.4 ± 7.8 years, 76.1 ± 13.3 kg body mass, 171.3 ± 7.2 cm height and 25.9 ± 3.7 kg/m2 body mass index (BMI). Anthropometric assessments of 6 skinfolds (tricipital, subscapular, suprascapular, supraspinal, abdominal, mid-thigh, and calf), waist and hip circumference were conducted, as well as IT surface temperature measurements at the measurement areas. Significant negative relationships were found between surface temperature and skinfold measurements at the subscapular, supraspinal, thigh and calf levels (p < 0.01; r = -0.39 to -0.55). The average IT temperature of the 6- folds and all individual folds IT had significant negative correlations with BMI, waist circumference, waist hip ratio, waist height ratio, and the sum of 6 skinfolds (p < 0.05; r = -0.35 to -0.65). There is a relationship between skin surface temperature and some body composition anthropometric parameters that indicate and association with CVRFs, therefore, IT may be a useful tool to complement the assessment of these parameters.

ABSTRACT

Introduction : The central thickness of the cornea can be changed during chronic hyperglycemia. Apart from chronic hyperglycemia, we believe that changes in corneal thickness also occur during de novo hyperglycemia. Objective: To determine the variation in the central thickness of the cornea during de novo hyperglycemia.Patients and Methods: This was an observational and cross-sectional analytical study conducted from July to November 2021, involving 222 people (444 eyes) with recent hyperglycemia. ECC was compared between the time of diagnosis (D0) and 30 days (Day 30) after initiation of hypoglycemic (Chi-2) therapy. The change in ECC between J0 and J30 was correlated with that of blood glucose (Spearman ; p<0,05).Results: ON D0, the mean ECC was 552.5±39.2 µm versus 538.0± 34.2 µm on D30 ( p=0.001) and the blood glucose mean was 18.1±8.2 mmo/l versus 6.9±3.0 mmol/l ( p=0.001). On D0, 57.0% had an ECC ˃ 550µm and on D30, 19.4% had decreased this thickness between 520 and 550 µm and 3.4% to less than 520 µm. On a population of 444 eyes, 28.2% ( n=125) decreased their ECC by 25 µm and more after initiation of hypoglycemic therapy. There was no correlation between the change in ECC and the change in blood glucose (r=0.018; p=0.704).Conclusion : These results show that there is a variation in ECC in case of recent glycemic imbalance

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: It is known that an increase in the subcutaneous body fat can alter the pattern of heat release through the skin. However, the relationship with other anthropometric variables and the influence of the Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) have scarcely been addressed. To determine the relationship of skin temperature with different anthropometric variables, body weight, and the REE of healthy adult males. The participants were a total of 24 healthy males of 33.9±8.7 years-old, 85.8±9.7 kg of body mass, 172.5±6.1 cm of height, and 28.9±3.4 kg/m2 of body mass index (BMI). Anthropometric, infrared thermography, and indirect calorimetry REE assessments were performed with gas analyzer. The six skinfolds average temperature, as well as the individual skinfolds (thoracoabdominal, supraspinal, and abdominal), had negative correlations with the BMI, waist circumference, waist- hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, and the sum of the six skinfolds, all with p<0.05. In addition, the temperature of the supraspinal fold had a negative correlation with the percentage of fat mass (MA%), r=0.47 (p=0.0194). MA% and BMI had negative correlations with REE, with r=-0.59 (p=0.002) and r=-0.53 (p=0.006), respectively. The six-skinfolds average temperature presented a positive correlation with the REE (r=0.44; p=0.02). Body composition changes cause a modification in the local surface thermography patterns without affecting the relationship between the average total body surface temperature with the REE; therefore, this could act as a predictive factor.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the agreement between the most used skinfold thickness equations with multi-frequency bioimpedance analysis in the prediction of body fat levels in children. Method: A cross-sectional study of healthy Brazilian community-dwelling individuals. The anthropometric assessment included height, body mass, arm circumference, and waist circumference. The percentage of body fat was obtained by measuring skinfold thickness equations and using bioimpedance analysis, and skinfold thickness was measured using a scientific skinfold caliper. Bland-Altman plot analysis was used to verify the agreement between the methods. Results: There were 439 children and adolescents evaluated, with a mean age of 11.6 ± 3.7 years. The mean body fat by bioimpedance analysis was 22.8% ± 10.4%, compared to 22.4% ± 8.8% by Slaughter (1), 20.4% ± 9.2% by Slaughter (2), 19.6% ± 4.4% by Goran, and 24.7% ± 10.0% by Huang equations. Bland-Altman plot analysis revealed limits of agreement greater than 8% between the bioimpedance analysis approach and equations, exceeding the clinically acceptable limit predefined a priori. None of the equations had good agreement with bioimpedance analysis. Conclusion: It was concluded that skinfold thickness and bioimpedance analysis should not be used interchangeably in children and adolescents.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: Screening for childhood obesity is a necessary step in developing appropriate and effective interventions. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of various recommended international anthropometric cut-offs based on body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), triceps skinfold (TSF), and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) in predicting excess adiposity (body fat ≥ 25%) in a random sample of Trinidadian preschoolers. Methods: After obtaining written parental consent, weight, height, WC, TSF, and MUAC were measured in 596 children using standard procedures. These were used to calculate BMI for age, WHtR, TSF-for-age z-scores, and MUAC-for-age z-scores. Percentage body fat was measured using a Tanita-531 foot-to-foot bioelectrical impedance analyser (BIA). Sensitivities, specificities and area under the receiver-operating curve analysis and predictive values were then computed in reference to BIA estimates. Results: The prevalence of excess adiposity was 12.2% and 5.1% among males and females, respectively. Sensitivities for the various cut-offs ranged from 20.0% to 75.0% and 57.1% to 96.9% among males and females, respectively. WHO-BMI recommended cut-offs and those based on MUAC z-scores had significantly higher sensitivities in females than in males. TSF z-scores had significantly lower sensitivities compared to those based on BMI and WHtR among males. Similarly, specificities ranged from 81.3% to 99.9% and 79.8% to 99.9% among males and females, respectively. In girls, cut-offs based on TSF z-scores had a higher likelihood ratio than cut-offs from Centers for Disease Control, International Obesity Task Force and WHtR. Diagnostic performance was not associated with ethnicity. Conclusion: Our results suggest that diagnostic performance was associated with gender and the cut-offs used; however, it was not associated with ethnicity.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The aim of this research was to determine the differences among the male basketball players of the National team of Montenegro U18 and the National team of Republic of North Macedonia, in terms of their anthropometric characteristics and body composition. A sample of 27 subjects was divided into two sub-samples. The first sub-sample of the subjects consisted of 15 players of the National team of Montenegro, average age 17.6±0.63, while the other sub-sample consisted of 12 players of the National team of Republic of North Macedonia, average age of 17.17± 0.72. All players were tested in Podgorica, in lasting period of two days, while they held preparations for the European Championship. Anthropometric characteristics and body composition were evaluated by a battery of eleven variables: body height (cm), body weight (kg), triceps skinfold, back skinfold, biceps skinfold, abdominal skinfold, thigh skinfold, calf skinfold, body mass index (BMI), percentage of fat and muscle mass (kg). Differences in anthropometric characteristic and composition of the body of the basketball players of two national teams were determined by using a discriminatory parametric procedure with t-test for small independent samples (p<0.05). The players of the two teams were found to differ statistically in thigh skinfold. Furthermore, it is concluded that Montenegro players are taller and heavier and have higher muscle mass than North Macedonian players, with approximate skinfolds, BMI and fat percentage values.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The objective of this research was to establish the anthropometric characteristics and somatotype profiles of Montenegrin male and female judokas, divided by weight categories. The sample was composed of 170 Montenegrin judokas, 92 male judo athletes (21.8 ± 3.9 years) and 78 female judo athletes (20.5 ± 3.1 years). All athletes were of national level, divided by official weight categories. This study provides normative data of anthropometric and somatotype profiles in relation to gender and weight categories of Montenegrin judo athletes. The anthropometric profiles changed according to weight category, whereas, anthropometric parameters were highest in the heaviest category as compared to other weight categories. In the domain of male somatotype profiles, three different types of somatotype in relation to weight category were obtained. The three weight categories were endomorphic mesomorphs (-90 kg, -100 kg, >100 kg), ectomorphic mesomorphs (-60 kg, -73 kg, -81 kg) and judo athletes of -66 kg were mesomorphic ectomorphs. All the female athletes were endomorphic mesomorphs, except for category 52. Representatives from the -52 kg were mesomorphic endomorphs. This study highlights how somatotype profiles of national judo athletes differ between weight categories. It is likely that some changes could be used in applying proper training methods with a focus on the athletes' physical abilities, which could result in a decrease in somatotype diversity among weight categories.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This article aims to evaluate the anthropometric equations developed by selected studies in order to estimate the body composition of neonates. The systematic review consisted in the research of published articles in the following databases: PubMed, Brazilian Virtual Health Library, Embase and ScienceDirect by utilizing the following descriptors: "fat mass, fat free mass, anthropometry, air displacement plethysmography, validation, neonate". For doing so, the PRISMA protocol has been utilized. The bibliographical research resulted in 181 articles. However, only eight were selected for the present review because repetition in different databases and having been performed in adults, during pregnancy, in athletes, in preterm and children. There was discrepancy in terms of study method, mainly over the variables of the anthropometric equations, age and ethnicity of the neonates. All studies used the plethysmography method as a reference apart from one study. Only four studies had their equations validated. The studies that developed anthropometric models for estimating the body composition of neonates are scarce, and the use of these equations needs to be conducted carefully in order to avoid errors in nutritional diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective To assess the utility of bioimpedance (BIA) and skinfolds thickness (SF) in body fat percentage measuring (%BF) compared to the reference method dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in Brazilian reproductive age women, as well as to estimate of inter- and intra-observer precision for SF. Subjects and methods 170 women aged 18-37 years with BMI between 18 and 39.9 kg/m2 were selected for this cross-sectional study. Body density was evaluated through equations proposed by Jackson, Pollock and Ward (1980) (EqJPW) and Petroski (1995) (EqPET), and %BF was estimated by BIA, DXA and Siri's formula (1961). The SF were measured by two separate observers: A and B (to determine inter-observer variability), who measured the folds at three times with 10-minute interval between them (to determine intra-observer variability - we used only observer A). Results The %BF by DXA was higher than those measured by SF and BIA (p<0.01, for all) of 90 volunteers. The Lin coefficient of agreement was considered satisfactory for %BF values obtained by EqJPW and BIA (0.55) and moderate (0.76) for sum of SF (ΣSF) values obtained by EqJPW and EqPET. No agreement was observed for the values obtained by SF (EqJPW and EqPET), BIA and DXA. Analysis of inter- and intra-observer of 59 volunteers showed that different measures of SF thickness met acceptability standards, as well as the % BF. Conclusion BIA and SF measurements may underestimate %BF compared with DXA. In addition, BIA and SF measurements are not interchangeable with DXA. However, our results suggest the equation proposed by Jackson, Pollock and Ward (three skinfolds) compared to BIA are interchangeable to quantify the %BF in Brazilian women in reproductive age. Furthermore, our results show acceptable accuracy for intra- and inter-observer skinfold measurements. Arch Endocrinol Metab. 2020;64(3):257-68

ABSTRACT

Sex differences are a very present aspect in the world of work and sports. This translates into the differentiation of sports activities, determined as masculine or feminine. Hence, the aim of the study was to analyze the level of participation and morphological characteristics in acrobatic gymnasts and to see the differences in relation to sex and role: Base and top. Participation in the Spanish Championships between 2011 and 2018 was analyzed, and anthropometric measures, body composition and proportionality were compared, depending on the role of performance and sex. The Autonomous Committee of Research Ethics of the Xunta de Galicia (Spain) approved the work methodology. The results showed a much higher percentage of participation according to sex in favor of the female sex in all the analyzed championships. However, the weight, body mass index and muscle percentage were not different between sexes in either of the two roles. Of the 62 morphological variables evaluated, there is a greater predominance of differences in the bases than in the tops ones in relation to sex, highlighting the percentage of fat.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate cardiorespiratory fitness' tracking from childhood to adolescence, as well as to test the moderation role of somatic maturation. Methods: Our sample was composed by 375 children (197 boys), with a baseline age between 7 and 10 years old. The children were followed-up over three years. Body mass and stature were measured as anthropometric indicators and were used to estimate maturity status through Moore's method. Cardiorespiratory fitness was evaluated through 9-minute running test. Body adiposity was estimated through the subcutaneous skinfold method, with measures of triceps and subscapular skinfolds and used as a covariate. Sample was categorized into tertiles. Thereafter, the Kappa (k) coefficient and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (LCCC) tests were adopted to verify stability. Dummy variable in regression was used to test moderation effects. All analyses were conducted in Stata 14.0, adopting p<0.05. Results: Cardiorespiratory fitness presented a moderate to low tracking from childhood to adolescence (k=0.294; LCCC=0.458). Moreover, maturity status significantly moderated the association between cardiorespiratory fitness at childhood and adolescence (regardless of cohort and body adiposity) among boys (β=0.644; p=0.003) and role sample (β=0.184; p=0.020), but not girls (-0.217; p=0.413). Conclusions: Tracking of cardiorespiratory fitness from childhood to adolescence is moderate to low in both sexes. Moreover, maturity status moderated the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness at baseline and in adolescence. A lower age at peak height velocity was associated to a greater cardiorespiratory fitness.

ABSTRACT

It is uncertain if exercise can influence the occurrence of T2DM in offspring of diabetic parents. Therefore this study was designed to assess the effect of exercise on skinfold thickness of offspring of T2DM parents compared with those of non-diabetic parents. This study involved convenience sampling of 50 offspring of T2DM parents attending University College Hospital, Ibadan and 50 offspring of nondiabetic parents who were undergraduate students of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Participants were randomly assigned into four groups using convenience sampling method: 25 Normal-weight Offspring of Non-Diabetic Parents (NONDP), 25 Normal-weight Offspring of Diabetic Parents (NODP), 25 Overweight Offspring of Non-Diabetic Parents (OONDP) and 25 Overweight Offspring of Diabetic Parents (OODP). Each participant followed a protocol of graded exercise using the "Tummy trimmer" everyday spending 30-45 minutes daily for 24 weeks. 4 sites of skinfold thickness (supra-iliac, Biceps, Triceps and sub-scapula) were measured by skinfold caliper. Weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) were estimated using standard methods at baseline, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 18 weeks and 24 weeks, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic and repeated ANOVA with p-value at n less than 0.05. The results indicate that compared to baseline, there were reductions at the four sites of skinfold thickness measurements (supra-iliac, Biceps, Triceps and sub-scapular). At supra-iliac site, skinfold thickness in NONDPreductions was from 7.16 mm ± 2.02 to 6.60 mm ± 4.40. The reduction trend for supra-iliac, Biceps, triceps and subscapular skinfold sites in NONDP were 0.56 mm, 0.79 mm, 1.66 mm and 0.19 mm respectively. While the reduction trend for supra-iliac, Biceps, triceps and subscapular skinfold sites in OODP were 0.56 mm, 1.10 mm, 2.06 mm and 1.52 mm respectively. At subscapular site, the average skinfold thickness reduction trend was 0.19 mm in control group 1.53 mm in test group. Thus, graded exercise reduced skinfold thickness in all the groups. The clinical importance of this in prevention of DM among offspring of diabetic parents is quite promising

ABSTRACT

The aim of this research was to determine the level of adiposity and obesity among Macedonian adolescents and to compare the results with previous studies conducted in this population, as well as those conducted in other populations. The sample included 2390 adolescents from four urban different regions of R. Macedonia aged between 11 to 18 years; 1238 males and 1152 females. Weight, height, waist, and hip circumference (WC, HC) as well as triceps, calf, subscapular, and suprailiac skinfold thickness (SFT) were measured. Body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), subscapular/triceps skinfold ratio (STR), and percentage body fat were computed. The prevalence of overweight and obesity defined by the IOTF children growth reference were calculated and age-dependent and gender-specific smoothed percentile curves for BMI and ROC curves were generated. The boys have statistically significantly higher values of WC, WHR and WHtR in all adult categories (except WHtR at 18 years old), greater body weight at the age of 12 to 18, and body weight 13 to 18 years (p<0.001). Weight, height and BMI are increasing with age in both, boys and girls, and decreases in girls. The level of adiposity of Macedonian adolescents has increased over the past 20 years and has reached the level of developed countries that face an obesity epidemic.
